General Vocal Competition Rules 


Categories & Repertoire

1. Popular Voice

Genres: Pop, Pop Folk, R&B, Soul, Rock, Alternative, Indie, Jazz, Country

Commercial covers or original compositions only

Not permitted: Musical Theatre, Cabaret, Rap, Hip Hop

RCM List C & D and Conservatory Canada Contemporary Idioms Voice selections are permitted (excluding Musical Theatre)

2. Musical Theatre

Selections must be from fully staged musical theatre productions

Junior or simplified versions are not permitted

No vocal cuts allowed

Transposition is permitted within reason

3. Songs from the Screen & More

Songs written specifically for film or television

Songs originally written for staged musicals are not permitted

Pop songs later used in films or jukebox musicals must be entered in Popular Voice

Duets & Trios

Duets (2 performers) and Trios (3 performers) only

Applicable to Musical Theatre and Songs from the Screen

Spoken text is allowed only if published in the score and must not exceed 10% of the selection

Music & Arrangement

Transposition (higher or lower) is permitted

Lengthy instrumental sections may be cut

No repeats or added music for dance breaks

 

Accompaniment

Acoustic piano accompaniment only

Popular Voice may use instrumental backing tracks without background vocals

Microphone and speaker will be provided

 

Memory Requirement

All selections must be performed from memory

 

Costumes & Props

Costumes are allowed but are not considered in adjudication

Maximum of two (2) handheld props

A chair will be provided if required

 

Content & Language

Selections must be age appropriate and suitable for all audiences

Offensive language must be replaced with clean alternatives (up to Intermediate level)

The festival reserves the right to reject any selection deemed inappropriate

 

Provincial Recommendation (OMFA)

One (1) selection may be recommended for OMFA

Please note: OMFA requires two musical numbers

**Registration and Exam Notes: You can register with one selection, but for the provincial competitions, you must have two selections prepared. If you choose two selections, they must be selected from different lists.
